A big misconception is that keep holding PS button will reset the controller's pairing. It DOES NOT!From my testings, the controller keeps paring with the last machine it was CONNECTED VIA A USB CABLE.

Here are the steps:

  1. Turn OFF your PS3 controller by either...
  • (on PS3) hold PS button -> Turn off Controller, OR
  • (on Mac) open Apple menu System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Click X button on the device list, OR
  • (on the controller itself) insert paperclip into pinhole near L2 button.
  1. Use a USB cable, connect the controller to your new machine you want.
  2. Wait just a second until the red light on the controller flashes, unplug the USB cable. Now the controller's setting is reset.
  3. On your computer, go to System Preferences (OS X) or Control Panel (PC)
  4. Open Bluetooth settings page. Start Scanning.
  5. Turn ON the controller by pressing the PS button. Wait a few seconds.
  6. If it asks for Access Code, enter 0000.

it is not Microsoft's job to write drivers for this Sony product. I have quite a collection of pads, some of which date back a decade or so, and fortunately either the manufacturers did their job and wrote drivers for it, or they conform to the various pc controller standards (directinput or xinput)

But a little digging points to a possible solution to get your ps2 usb controller working..

Windows 8 and 8.1 disable 'unsigned' drivers by default (if it's 64-bit, it won't even tell you this is happening!). So, you install your driver, the driver install program says success, and Windows 8 immediately tosses your new driver into the netherworld. I'm guessing most PS2 controller to PC adapters have unsigned drivers.
Disabling this...um...'feature' in Windows 8 can be done. Not fun, involves lots of restarts, but you can do it. There's a guide (with pictures!) here:

Once you've got signature verification turned off, you should be able to install the drivers for your device. You may have to then manually select the driver for it in Printers and Devices or Device Manager.

Unsigned drivers for usb devices are a bit of a security risk.
